Sleeping is a Skill

So, we have been having some trouble putting our little girl to sleep the last few weeks. The only way we could get her to drift off was to wrap her in a blanket and walk with her. And walk, and walk, and WALK. Finally she would fall asleep. Then this last week walking was not enough, she had to be held for at least 10-15 minutes until she was REALLY asleep. On Saturday night I walked with her for about 15 minutes and sat with her for another 15. I was really frustrated. I knew the day would come when she had to learn to fall asleep by herself, but I wasn't sure when that day was.

I was talking with a lady at church yesterday that had a 8 month old little girl. She had been having the same problem and finally on friday she decided her daughter was going to learn to go to sleep by herself. Her little girl screamed for 70 minutes! WOW. That is a determined kid.

Trev and I got home from church and I told him it was time for our child to learn a new skill. I wrapped her up, walked her until she was asleep and put her in her crib. She awoke and was MAD! She cried for about 20 minutes. That was a very long 20 minutes for me. The second time we did it she whined for about 10 and cried for 5 and went to sleep. Today I put her down for a nap at 4:00 this afternoon and she whined for 5 minutes and fell asleep all by herself! Victory!

There was no screaming until she couldn't breath or choaking on her own spit. It was wonderful. Now, hopefully she will retain this skill. And hopefully my back can recover from all the walking.
