We saw birds, dogs, a cat, a squirrel, and a Pug. (which I have been told is a canine, but I am not sure I believe that) We stopped a few times for Brook to point to her shoes and say "boots". She is fascinated by her footwear.
About 1.75 blocks into our 2 block walk Brook tripped on a crack on the side walk, hit her face on the cement and split her lip open. Blood, spit and tears were everywhere. For a moment I considered walking home, but the bank was the closest place to find any kind of absorbent material to clean her up, so in we went. The ladies were so good. They gave us kleenex, paper towels, and even dampened a few with cold water to keep down the swelling in Brooks puffy lip. Our jackets were nicely soiled with blood, but other than that we were fine. Brook's crying was quickly silenced when Linda, one of the tellers, offered her a basket of suckers to choose from. I made my deposit and we were on our way back home.
Brook fully enjoyed her sucker, which made our walk home a bit longer, but we were in no hurry. She would stop, touch the sucker with her thumb and forefinger, then put it back in her mouth. A few times we had to break for her to switch the sucker from hand to hand. During one of these exchanges the sucker fell to the ground, caked with dirt. Before I could intervien the sucker was back in her mouth. She didn't even seem to notice the extra garnish of gravel.
By the time we got home both of us were very sticky and still quite bloody. It was a good walk, but it didn't quite turn out the way I had planned. I guess that is how life is all the time. What a beautiful day it was this morning.
Moral of the story: When traveling with a small child never leave home without a pocket full of kleenex and your sense of adventure.
